User clicks on Google Search Engine Results are flat
Studies show that over half of Google searches (58–59%) now end without any click to a website (so-called “zero-click” searches).
This reflects users increasingly getting answers directly on the results page (via featured snippets or AI summaries) instead of clicking through.
AI is becoming a new source of traffic
OpenAI’s ChatGPT was handling around 37.5 million user prompts per day in late 2024, compared to Google’s 14 billion daily searches. By Q4 2024 about 21% of U.S. web users were visiting ChatGPT monthly, yet 99.8% of those users also still used Google.

The impact of Google AI Overviews
By May 2025, Google’s AI Overview was appearing in roughly 20% of U.S. desktop searches (mostly on broad informational queries). When these AI summaries are present at the top of the page, users often get their answers immediately – resulting in far fewer clicks on the organic results below.
Data from Similarweb show that after Google launched AI Overviews in May 2024, the percentage of news-related searches that yielded no click to a news site jumped from 56% to nearly 69% by May 2025 . In other words, over two-thirds of Google searches about news end without a click-out, a sharp increase in “zero-click” behavior within a year.
Search traffic drops between 1% and 25%
Publishers are reporting significant declines in Google referral traffic as a result. In a mid-2025 survey of 19 major publishing companies (news and entertainment) by Digital Content Next, the majority experienced year-over-year search traffic drops between 1% and 25% . The median decline in Google search referrals was about -10% overall (with news publishers down 7% and non-news content sites down 14% YoY) .
These losses coincided directly with the rollout of AI summaries. Importantly, many of these publishers still rank highly in search; it’s the clicks that have fallen.
The UK’s Publishers Association provided concrete examples: one lifestyle site saw a popular “How to get rid of [insect]” article maintain first-page ranking and similar impression volume, yet its CTR plummeted from 5.1% to just 0.6% over the past year once Google began displaying an AI-generated answer for that query.
